Innovation Centers

The rapidly growing acceptance of 3D printers in industry, government and academia has provided new opportunities for educational institutions to create exciting innovation centers which help students envision solutions to problems in 3 dimensions. Such solutions can then, with the aid of appropriate software and hardware, be translated into digital models that are “rapidly prototyped”, evaluated, refined and prepared for use. MakerBot® is one of TSI’s manufacturing partners that has created a framework for such “MakerBot Innovation Centers” consisting of a minimum of twenty-five 3D printers as well as custom print management software including installation, training for your team, consumables for your expected output, and support from a dedicated agent, which includes weekly calls and an annual on-site visit. Different institutions and programs may choose to create very different types of innovation centers depending upon their local needs. The following examples illustrate only a couple of the exciting possibilities. Please contact your TSI Sales Representative to discuss your needs and ideas for an appropriate innovation center for your institution.

Examples

1. MakerBot Innovation Center for the support of a project-based course required of all incoming freshmen in engineering: “Introduction to Engineering Design”. In such a course, the fundamentals of good engineering design are taught through a combination of lecture and small 3D design assignments that require the student to iteratively produce and refine their design solutions through rapid prototyping of the parts of the final product.

2. MakerBot Innovation Center for the support of a senior design projects course in “Multidisciplinary Team Approach to Product Design and Development.” In such a course, multidisciplinary teams consisting of students with different majors and backgrounds (e.g., architecture, arts, business, engineering, medicine, science) are taught how to organize and perform as a team for the iterative design and development of viable and safe products.
